A Fun Apple Away Keeps the PhD stay.

Yea, that happened today.  Brook and I have been in the process of rearranging our grad office and today I put up some Halloween decorations. With Brook's help we added some awesome christmas lights and a few more cobwebs after I took this picture.

What is kind of hilarious about our new decked out office is that tomorrow the Provost will be visiting the MDA building and taking a tour.  Part of me thinks it would be great for him to get a sneak peak inside our office and part of me thinks that it might not be the best idea.

What can I say? This was a new place, part of my new home and I felt the urge to nest and have a little fun while doing it.

That is what today's post is about. Remembering to have fun in the midst of all the stress and the chaos that is a PhD. program.  Gratefully the other two female PhD. students in my program and a new MFA lady have been helping me get out of my apartment and have more fun.

There comes a time during any new project or journey when taking a break and having fun become vital to the success of that journey. So often we push and stress ourselves and forget that the ying of stress is to the yang of fun. It is all about balance.

Having fun is not just for distracting yourself from the stresses of life and work. You should always try and have fun in your work as well. I have been told over and over again by many a smart person that when I go to write my dissertation I need to make sure it is on a topic that I enjoy.  When I started writing my thesis, I really loved Betty White and Joan Rivers.  They were interesting to research but also entertaining to watch. I am lucky in that I still love all of the women that I wrote about in my thesis. While that are old, talking about them didn't get old. I am sorry. It has been a long day and that was a bad joke.

I know I have written a few posts about my dissertation woes but I think the conclusion I am coming too is that whatever I end up writing about I know it will be good because I will enjoy it.
